Martins Moye, the Controller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Edo State, has expressed concern over the increasing flow of irregular migrants into the country. He made this statement during the 2024 NIS campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of irregular migration, held in Benin City.
The event, themed “Say No to Migrant Smuggling: If You Must Migrate, Migrate Safely, Orderly, and Regularly,” highlighted the growing urgency of addressing the issue. Moye underscored the need for greater vigilance and proactive measures to combat illegal migration, noting the rising numbers of people entering Nigeria through unsafe channels.
David Amanahu, Assistant Controller of Immigration and a guest speaker from the NIS headquarters in Abuja, echoed the Controller-General’s message, stressing the agency’s intensified focus on improving border management and migration controls.
Deputy Superintendent of Immigration, Woshak Danladi, also took the floor to discuss the dangerous consequences of irregular migration. “It can cost you your freedom, and in some tragic cases, your life,” Danladi warned, citing the risks of organ trafficking, human rights violations, and exploitation. He urged NIS officers to continue educating the public on these dangers to prevent further harm.
