Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu, CON, was laid to rest on Friday in his hometown of Uburu, Ebonyi State. This was shared in a statement by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Facebook.
Governor Otti also announced the renaming of Abia State Polytechnic in Aba to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, in recognition of the late governor’s enduring legacy.
He wrote:
“Today, we joined fellow Nigerians in bidding farewell to Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu, CON, former Governor of Abia State, as we laid him to rest in Uburu, Ebonyi State. His passing in April has left a significant void. My condolences go to his family and the people of Ebonyi.
“Dr. Onu’s legacy extends far beyond his political career. As the first elected governor of Abia, a Federal Minister, and a founding member of the APC, his humility and leadership were remarkable. In 1999, he prioritized Nigeria’s unity by stepping down from his presidential bid, exemplifying true patriotism.
“Though his tenure as governor was short, his impact was lasting. He founded Abia State Polytechnic, Aba; Abia State College of Education, Arochukwu; and the National Ambassador newspaper. He also established the Federal University of Agriculture, now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU). These institutions embody his vision for education and progress in Abia.
“In his honor, we’ve renamed Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.
“Dr. Onu’s life is a testament to the power of determination and vision. We will continue to uphold his values and legacy with the same passion he showed throughout his life. May his soul rest in peace.”
