Doctors in Kano State have suspended services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital indefinitely, starting from 12:00 pm on November 6, 2024. This move follows an alleged assault on a female doctor by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, on November 1, 2024.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano chapter, claims the commissioner and her security team harassed the doctor over a medication shortage, despite an investigation confirming the doctor’s professionalism. The NMA has demanded the commissioner’s immediate removal from the state cabinet and better security for healthcare workers.
The association says the strike is necessary to protect staff and ensure the safety of patients. No action has been taken by the state government despite an earlier 48-hour ultimatum.
