The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced the start of a nationwide birth registration and social mobilization campaign.
This initiative aims to ensure that every child in Nigeria can access essential services such as education, healthcare, and social protection. NOA’s Director General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and States Operations, emphasized that the focus will be on registering children aged 0–5 years and providing them with a National Identification Number (NIN) at no cost.
He stated: “In collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, NOA is launching this birth registration campaign to guarantee that every child in Nigeria has access to critical services like education and healthcare. We are particularly concentrating on children aged 0-5 and will provide them with a free NIN.”
“Birth registration is a fundamental right for every child, and this initiative underscores its significance for the child, family, community, and nation. It serves as the first legal recognition of a child’s existence, protecting their rights and enabling access to essential services necessary for their growth and future.”
“Accurate birth registration is crucial for national planning and development, supplying vital data for education, healthcare, and public services. By registering their child’s birth, families ensure state recognition, safeguarding against abuse, exploitation, and statelessness.”
“We encourage parents and guardians to visit their nearest NPC registration center to register their children. The process is straightforward, free of charge, and only requires supporting documents such as an immunization card or an existing birth certificate.”
“Throughout this initiative, every child aged 0-5 years will receive a NIN upon registration and face capturing. We urge all parents, guardians, and community leaders to take part in this important effort. Let’s unite to provide every child in Nigeria with the best possible start in life.”
The birth registration campaign, which began in August, will continue until November 2024. Don’t miss this chance to ensure that every child in your community can access vital services.
