Cassius, the saltwater crocodile recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest crocodile in captivity, has passed away in Australia.
Believed to be over 110 years old, Cassius measured 5.48 meters (18 feet) and weighed more than a ton. He had been residing at a wildlife sanctuary on Green Island, near Cairns in Queensland, for over 37 years, as reported on the sanctuary’s Facebook page.
The Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat stated that Cassius had been in declining health since October 15. In a tribute post featuring a photo of him enjoying a meal during his prime, they remarked, “He was very old and believed to have lived beyond the typical lifespan of a wild crocodile.”
Originally from the neighboring Northern Territory, Cassius was a significant attraction in the region’s tourism industry. The sanctuary added, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
