A 39-year-old man in South Africa has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping his friend’s wife. The incident occurred in May 2022 after the group of friends attended a funeral and later went for drinks in Lydenburg. The victim, 44, felt tired and decided to head home, where she was later assaulted by the convict who had returned to the house, gaining access by obtaining the house keys .
According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the provincial police spokesperson, the victim was asleep when the rape occurred. The incident was reported to the police, leading to an investigation by the family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit, and ultimately resulting in the man’s arrest .
The convict was sentenced by the Lydenburg Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Monday, October 28, 2024. Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, acting provincial commissioner of police, praised the investigators, prosecutors, and judiciary for their exceptional work on the case, stating that they are making progress in addressing gender-based violence
