The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, a representative for Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, following allegations of assault against a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.
According to a statement from FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh’s residence, leading to a dispute over the delivery method.
Reports indicate that Ikwechegh slapped the driver and made derogatory remarks about the Inspector General of Police.
The FCT Police Command expressed serious concern regarding Ikwechegh’s behavior and confirmed that he is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the altercation began during the package delivery. Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly assaulted during this confrontation,” the police stated.
The police emphasized their disapproval of Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward the Inspector General’s office, noting that after the incident, he contemptuously told the driver, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” reflecting a concerning disregard for law enforcement authority.
The altercation occurred on Sunday at Ikwechegh’s Abuja home. Following the incident, Abuwatseya reported that the lawmaker insulted him, saying, “You are just a common Bolt driver; you’re poor and proud.”
While Abuwatseya was initially arrested and taken to the Maitama Police Station, he was denied the opportunity to make calls, with police officers accusing him of confronting a “senator” at his residence. Although he has since been released, his vehicle remains in police custody.
