Geoff Capes, a three-time Olympian and former World’s Strongest Man, has passed away at the age of 75, as confirmed by his family.
Regarded as Great Britain’s greatest shot putter, Capes still holds the record for the longest throw, achieving a distance of 21.68 meters in 1980. He was crowned the World’s Strongest Man twice, first in 1983 and again in 1985.
In a statement, Capes’ family shared, “The family of Geoffrey Capes would like to announce his sad passing today, 23rd October. He was Britain’s finest shot putter and a two-time world’s strongest man.”
Capes became a household name in the 1980s, frequently showcasing his remarkable strength on television, and later appeared on reality shows after retiring from competition.
British Athletics expressed their sorrow on X, stating, “We are saddened to hear the news of former British shot putter, Geoff Capes’ passing. Our condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
