Tensions flared in Osun State on February 2, 2025, when Amotekun operatives clashed with police officers guarding illegal miners, resulting in injuries to several officers.
Sources revealed that the police officers, led by ASP Ako Abiodun, were stationed at an illegal mining site along Ibadan Road, Osogbo, after reportedly accepting bribes. The operation was ordered by ACP Ige Adekunle, Commander of MOPOL 39 Osogbo.
An officer on the scene explained that ASP Abiodun left the location without notifying his subordinates, leaving them vulnerable to an attack. When Amotekun operatives arrived, they targeted the police officers, injuring Inspectors Taofiq Adebayo, Falani Banji, and others stationed at the site.
Following the incident, ACP Ige Adekunle allegedly attempted to cover up the event, asking Amotekun Chairman Mr. Omoyele, a retired police officer, to keep the matter from the media. One source claimed that Amotekun personnel warned ASP Abiodun to leave before their arrival, but he departed without informing his team of the impending danger.
The State Police Command Spokeswoman, Opalola Yemisi, said she would investigate the incident when contacted by SaharaReporters.
