Kenneth Okonkwo, a former member of the Labour Party (LP), has called on President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside from the 2027 presidential race. Okonkwo, who served as a spokesman for the LP’s 2023 campaign team alongside Obi, has shifted his stance on Obi and now urges these three political figures to allow new contenders to emerge in Nigeria’s upcoming elections.
In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okonkwo reaffirmed his position, stating that in Nigeria, a mandate must be earned with seriousness and commitment. He added that winning an election isn’t enough; one must also fight to protect the mandate.
Although Okonkwo worked with Obi in 2023, he emphasized that the past should stay in the past and made it clear he would not support Obi in future elections. Okonkwo, who was instrumental in Labour Party’s rise in the last election, said the party’s internal issues led to his resignation on Tuesday.
While ruling out a return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Okonkwo emphasized that if the APC improved and truly served Nigeria, he would be the first to acknowledge it. He criticized the ruling party for failing to address the nation’s pressing problems.
