A recent report indicates that Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption has decreased by 92% since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023. According to data from Channels Television, sourced from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) dropped to 4.5 million liters as of August 20, 2024. In May 2023, daily consumption was recorded at 60 million liters.
The analysis revealed that only 16 out of Nigeria’s 36 states received petrol allocations from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) during the month, leading to shortages in the remaining states.
The allocation breakdown showed that Niger received the highest amount with 21 trucks, totaling 940,000 liters daily, followed by Lagos with 12 trucks (726,001 liters) and Kaduna with 12 trucks (454,001 liters). Other states received varying amounts: Oyo (12 trucks, 454 liters), Kano (9 trucks), Ondo (6 trucks), Kwara (6 trucks), Edo (4 trucks), and the Federal Capital Territory (4 trucks). Additionally, Sokoto received 4 trucks, Ogun 3 trucks, Osun 3 trucks, Gombe 1 truck, Benue 1 truck, Ekiti 1 truck, and Kebbi 1 truck.
