The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has stated that he will not discuss President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, citing a desire not to support the current administration.
Sanusi, who previously served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), made the revelation on Wednesday, Jan. 15, in Lagos while chairing the 21st Anniversary of Fawehinmiism (Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture 2025).
He explained that discussing the government’s policies would assist them, but he has no intention of offering that help due to how he has been treated.
Sanusi remarked, “I could offer a few alternative perspectives, explaining what we’re going through, most of which was predictable and possibly avoidable. But I’ve decided not to do that.”
He continued, “I’ve chosen not to speak about the economy or the reforms. Explaining them would aid this government, and I don’t want to do that.”
He further stated, “They are my friends, but when they don’t act like friends, I won’t act like one. I watch them act like puppets and lack credible voices to explain their actions. I won’t help them. I began by offering help, but I’ve stopped. Let them explain their policies to Nigerians.”
Sanusi also added, “While watching this unfold, I’m enjoying a good movie with popcorn. One thing I’ll say: what we’re experiencing now is, in part, the result of decades of poor economic management.”
He concluded, “People were warned years ago that continuing down this path would lead to this outcome, but they chose not to listen. Is everything being done today right? No.”
