– Tensions escalated outside the Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City today when an unidentified individual, dressed in attire resembling the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), fired shots into the air. The PDP has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating this disruption to derail the ongoing legal challenge over the disputed Edo State governorship election.
In a statement, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, condemned the act as a “desperate move” by the APC to obstruct the tribunal’s proceedings and tarnish the PDP’s reputation. The PDP clarified it had instructed all members to avoid the area due to concerns about potential APC-instigated violence.
“Why would the PDP, seeking to reclaim its mandate, disrupt the very process that offers it a chance to do so?” the statement asked. The PDP also pointed out that the gunman, seen freely moving on a busy street in a viral video, was not detained by nearby police.
Witnesses said the shooter arrived in a white, unmarked Hilux, wearing a mask and PDP-branded clothing, before firing shots into the air, causing panic. Videos from the scene showed people fleeing. While order was restored by security personnel, concerns about the police response have been raised.
The PDP has accused the APC of using similar tactics in local areas to intimidate and distract from the tribunal’s proceedings. The party has called for the arrest and prosecution of the shooter, who is believed to be an APC supporter, based on circulating footage.
This incident highlights the growing tensions at the governorship election tribunal, where the PDP is contesting the victory of Monday Okpebholo of the APC. The PDP claims its win was stolen through electoral malpractice and is determined to use the tribunal to reclaim its mandate.
The PDP concluded with a stern warning to the APC: “Enough with this lawlessness. It must stop immediately to prevent further disruption and a complete breakdown of order in the state.”
