A stampede in Okija, Anambra State, has tragically claimed several lives as residents gathered to collect food items.
The incident occurred when a prominent community figure distributed food as Christmas gifts, drawing an uncontrollable crowd. Most of the victims were women, and their bodies have been moved to the morgue.
This tragedy comes just days after 35 children lost their lives in a stampede at a Christmas event in Ibadan, Oyo State, and 10 others died during a food-sharing event in Abuja.
Commenting on the incident, Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said:
“Police operatives have secured the scene where the alleged stampede occurred early today, 21/12/2024, leaving some fatally wounded.
Initial findings indicate that a well-known philanthropist from Okija organized the annual distribution of palliatives for the less privileged. Sadly, before the event could begin, an overwhelming and uncontrolled crowd surged into the area, resulting in the stampede.
While details about the victims remain unclear, investigations are ongoing.”
