The Arewa Youths Initiative for Energy Reforms (AYIFER) has called on Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, to ensure the timely completion of the Kaduna Refinery to high standards. The group expressed its concerns in a statement released on Friday, signed by Alhaji Bashir Al’Amin and Mr. Gideon Yakubu.
AYIFER emphasized that the northern region’s future hinges on the successful operation of the Kaduna Refinery. The group urged Kyari to deliver a world-class refinery, similar to the Dangote Refinery, and avoid replicating the Port Harcourt Refinery, which has faced criticism from local communities and stakeholders.
The statement noted that the Port Harcourt Refinery is seen as a blending plant and has drawn negative feedback, which the group hoped Kyari would address. AYIFER expressed confidence that Kyari, as a seasoned expert, would ensure the delivery of a top-tier refinery in Kaduna, a region that has seen the decline of key industries, such as the collapse of the groundnut pyramid, textiles, and PAN in Kaduna.
The group also called for professional work in rehabilitating the old refinery, urging the NNPCL to avoid creating another subpar facility. AYIFER conveyed strong support for Kyari and hoped his efforts would restore the region’s economic standing, while also praying for his success in completing the project on time. The statement concluded with a promise of celebration once the refinery meets expectations.
