The Kano State Government has strongly criticized the Federal Government for its role in sealing off the entrance to the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II on Friday, December 6.
Armed police officers and Department of State Services (DSS) agents were reported to have blocked the palace, causing tension in the area. The Emir was scheduled to speak on the controversial tax reform bills before the National Assembly and was also set to accompany the newly appointed district head, Munir Sanusi, to Bichi. Despite the blockade, the Emir continued his duties, holding court at the outer palace before leading Friday prayers at the Kano Central Mosque.
In response to the incident, Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, expressed his displeasure in a local radio interview, directing blame at the Federal Government.
“We were taken aback when we woke up to find police blocking the entrance to the Emir’s palace,” Bichi said. “What is most surprising is that Kano has remained peaceful, but certain individuals with support from Abuja seem intent on disturbing that peace. The Emir was supposed to accompany his district head to Bichi, and we were all invited to join. When we asked why this action was taken, we were told it came from higher authorities. And we know those authorities are in Abuja.”
Bichi emphasized that the people of Kano are committed to maintaining peace and stability, adding, “We will not allow anyone to destabilize Kano. The Emir has appointed the district head, and this decision stands. Whenever he is ready, we will go with him to Bichi. There’s no turning back.”
