Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United board have been prohibited from entering the team’s dressing room at Old Trafford after matches.
This decision follows the club’s new part owner, INEOS, removing Ferguson from his multi-million-pound ambassadorial role as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative.
Ferguson, who has served as a global ambassador for Manchester United since stepping down as manager 11 years ago, will see his lucrative salary end after this season, a move driven by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s efforts to reduce costs.
Additionally, reports suggest that Ferguson will no longer have access to the dressing room after matches at Old Trafford. According to the Daily Mail, this is due to a shift in policy that asks him to stay away from the area.
While Manchester United denies imposing a direct ban, the club has acknowledged a new “collective understanding” regarding who is permitted to enter the dressing room.
This change brings an end to a long-standing tradition at the club, where figures like David Gill, Mike Edelson, and Sir Bobby Charlton were often seen speaking with players post-match.
Ferguson was reportedly informed of these changes during a face-to-face meeting with Ratcliffe, who also confirmed that the club could no longer support his ambassadorial salary. However, Ferguson is expected to remain a non-executive director at the club.
