Around 30 people have been confirmed dead after armed assailants attacked several communities in two Local Government Areas of Benue State.
The affected areas are Kastina-Ala and Logo LGAs, where multiple rural communities were targeted on Sunday and early Monday.
Eyewitnesses report that 10 bodies were recovered in Kastina-Ala, while 20 were found in Logo. The attackers, believed to be militia from outside Nigeria, were heavily armed.
Chief Joseph Anawah, a community leader in Logo, described the assault on Azege settlement and the Tombo Council Ward area. “Over 300 armed men attacked around 7 am on Sunday. The security forces on the ground couldn’t repel them due to their large numbers and advanced weaponry. It was only after a military jet arrived that the attackers retreated,” Anawah said.
Justine Shaku, the Council Chairman of Kastina-Ala LGA, confirmed the attack in his area. “Many people were killed, and significant property was destroyed. The attackers targeted Adabo village and Tse Gwebe settlement in Utange Council Ward of Shitile in Kastina-Ala,” Shaku said.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, also confirmed the incident but reported fewer casualties.
