The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has strongly opposed the controversial Tax Reform Bill, labeling it as a policy that could undermine Nigeria’s unity. The forum, in a statement issued after its meeting on November 23, 2024, criticized the bill’s lack of stakeholder input and accused its proponents of excluding key figures, including members of the National Economic Council.
Professor Ango Abdullahi, the convener of NEF, raised concerns about the bill’s potential to marginalize the North’s resource capabilities, which are vital for national stability. “The Tax Reform Bill, in its current form, is a serious threat to our national cohesion and unity,” the communiqué stated.
The NEF also expressed disapproval over the manner in which the bill was introduced, suggesting hidden motives behind its push. The forum urged Northern lawmakers to speak out and protect the interests of the region, stressing that silence on such a critical matter would no longer be tolerated.
“The Northern States Governors’ Forum and Northern Nigeria Traditional Rulers have already opposed the bill, and we call on all Northerners to stay alert and safeguard their rights during elections,” NEF emphasized.
The forum concluded with a plea for policies that prioritize inclusivity, fairness, and national unity, urging policymakers to ensure that decisions reflect the diverse needs of all regions.
