Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader and self-declared Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, has been arrested in Finland alongside four other individuals on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities.
Reports indicate that Ekpa was taken into custody following an appearance at the Päijät-Häme District Court, where he was charged with public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent. The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrests in a statement released on November 21, 2024, naming Ekpa as the primary suspect. He is accused of using his platform to encourage violent actions, including attacks on civilians and authorities in southeastern Nigeria.
The four other suspects, who were arrested alongside Ekpa, are believed to be involved in financing the alleged terrorist activities. Police sources noted that these individuals are suspected of providing financial support to the operations under investigation.
The ongoing investigation, led by Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen, is focused on Ekpa’s role in promoting violence through social media and other means, inciting unrest and criminal acts in the region. The authorities also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in their efforts to address these charges.
The five suspects are expected to face further hearings at the Päijät-Häme District Court on November 21, as the legal process continues.
