In a significant development, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced the immediate implementation of a new minimum wage for all administrative staff within the FCT. Starting immediately, the new minimum wage will be N70,000, marking a significant increase in the pay for workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
This move follows the recent signing of the new Minimum Wage Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu in May 2024, after several months of deliberation and negotiations with organized labor groups across the country.
The approval was formally communicated in a statement signed by Anthony Odeh, Press Secretary to the Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, which was made available to the media on Tuesday. According to the statement, the approval was granted on Monday, November 18, 2024, as part of efforts to improve the welfare of FCT workers and ease the financial burden on civil servants in the region.
Mrs. Grace Adayilo, the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, revealed that in addition to the new wage structure, the minister has also sanctioned the payment of three months’ arrears for all staff of the FCTA, effective from November 2024. This gesture is aimed at addressing the backlog of payments and ensuring that employees are compensated for their hard work and dedication.
This move is seen as a major step towards improving the living standards of civil servants in the FCT, especially as inflation and economic challenges continue to affect the purchasing power of many Nigerians.
With this new development, the FCTA aims to further strengthen its commitment to the welfare of its workers and ensure they are adequately compensated for their contributions to the governance and development of the nation’s capital.
