Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, has criticized Nigerian politicians for being selective about the churches they attend, often choosing those that align with their interests and avoid challenging their corrupt practices.
In a candid interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political program on Channels Television, Cardinal Onaiyekan remarked that many politicians deliberately seek out churches and pastors who won’t question their moral character or address their greed.
“I’ve observed that in Nigeria, those with selfish motives tend to carefully pick the churches they attend and the preachers they listen to,” he said. “If they find themselves in a church where their behavior is challenged or where they feel uncomfortable, they simply won’t return. But we need more of that kind of honest challenge.”
The Cardinal emphasized that while churches may be growing and expanding, it is essential to focus on the true message of godliness rather than just the outward success of building bigger structures. “It’s not enough for churches to be full or for us to have large buildings,” he said. “We need to see real godliness in our communities. If religion doesn’t lead to a genuine moral transformation, it’s as if it doesn’t exist at all.”
His comments highlight the need for a more accountable and morally driven approach to both faith and leadership in the country.
