The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Babatunde Osibodu, announced early on Sunday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the local government elections held on Saturday. Osibodu confirmed that the APC secured all 20 chairmanship positions and 236 councillorship seats across the state.
At the OGSIEC headquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, Osibodu revealed that 613,156 votes were cast in the chairmanship elections across the 20 local governments. The poll saw participation from 19 political parties, including the APC, Accord Party, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, Labour Party, and others.
Despite the announcement, several opposition parties have rejected the election results and the process. Femi Aina, Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ogun, raised concerns about the integrity of the election, calling it “chaotic” and urging the state House of Assembly to investigate the conduct of OGSIEC. He questioned the use of business cards for voting, late arrivals of election officials, and shortages of ballot papers, claiming the election was “corrupt.”
Similarly, Lookman Jagun, the state chairman of the Labour Party, rejected the results, labeling the election a “sham.” He urged OGSIEC to annul the election, citing violations of Ogun’s electoral law. Jagun added that the public, through radio and TV, had voiced strong opposition to the process, and the Labour Party would challenge the results in court if necessary.
Dr. Sunday Solarin, the PDP Secretary in Ogun, also condemned the election, calling it a “sham” and accusing APC supporters of attacking opposition members.
