The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organization, has urged the federal government to refrain from intimidating former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
In a statement released yesterday, MURIC’s Founder and Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, warned that targeting El-Rufai would tarnish the reputation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a democratic government.
El-Rufai recently suggested there might be plans to arrest him following his criticism of the APC-led government and his alleged ties with opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
MURIC emphasized El-Rufai’s significant role in the success of the ruling party during the 2023 elections, as well as his contributions to President Tinubu’s victory. The statement continued, “We advise the federal government against intimidating El-Rufai, if the rumors are true, as it would damage the image of the Tinubu administration and suggest a willingness to suppress opposition.”
MURIC added that respecting El-Rufai’s freedom of movement would bolster the federal government’s global reputation, especially in an interconnected world.
