Democratic Texas lawmaker Al Green, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has announced plans to file articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump over his proposal to “take over Gaza.”
During a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump stated that the U.S. would take control of the Gaza Strip to “dismantle and develop it,” calling the area a “hellhole.”
Gaza has been devastated due to recent escalations between Hamas and Israel.
In response, Green called Trump’s proposal a “dastardly deed” and condemned the idea of ethnic cleansing in Gaza. He also criticized Netanyahu for not speaking out against Trump’s remarks, given the history of the Israeli people.
Green quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stating, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” adding that what happens in Gaza impacts justice in the U.S. He declared, “The movement to impeach the president has begun,” and vowed to pursue impeachment over Trump’s actions.
Green emphasized that this impeachment effort would be driven by the public, saying, “When the people demand it, it will be done.”
Although Green has previously launched multiple unsuccessful impeachment attempts during Trump’s first term, this new effort is unlikely to gain significant momentum, as impeachment is not a top priority for Green’s party at the moment.
