Marcelo, the iconic Brazil defender, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.
A left-back with an illustrious career, Marcelo earned 58 caps for Brazil and became one of the most decorated players in football history. His football journey began at Fluminense, his boyhood club in Brazil, before he made the move to Real Madrid in 2007 at just 18 years old.
During his remarkable 15-year career at the Bernabeu, Marcelo amassed 25 major trophies, including five prestigious Champions League titles and six La Liga championships, cementing his status as a true legend.
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Marcelo reflected on his journey: “At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileno. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains, and so many magical nights at the Bernabeu. What a journey!”
Marcelo’s career may have come to an end as a player, but he remains passionate about contributing to the world of football in the future. “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything,” he added.
In 2021, Marcelo was named club captain, making history as the first non-Spaniard to hold the armband in the club’s 117-year history.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez praised the Brazilian legend, saying: “Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football, and we have had the privilege of enjoying him for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends, and Real Madrid is and will always be his home.”
After leaving Madrid at the end of the 2021-22 season, Marcelo moved to Greek club Olympiacos, but his tenure was brief, with him departing just five months later after a mutual agreement. In 2023, he returned to Fluminense for a second spell, making 68 appearances over two seasons. However, his time at the club came to an abrupt end in November 2023 after a public disagreement with manager Mano Menezes.
Marcelo’s legacy, marked by his exceptional skills, leadership, and numerous triumphs, will be remembered as one of the greatest in football history.
