
Moses Effiong, a former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s national team and assistant coach at Akwa United Football Club, has passed away in the United States after a prolonged battle with illness.
His death comes just three months after celebrating his 65th birthday, holding on to hopes of overcoming the health challenges that led him to seek medical treatment abroad.
Effiong’s passing was confirmed on Sunday by Akwa United’s Chairman, Paul Bassey, in a statement released by the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick.
Bassey remembered the late Effiong as a true professional, a dedicated coach, and a wonderful family man. He highlighted Effiong’s commitment and passion for his role, as well as his dedication to the success of those he worked with.
The statement read: “The Management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club are deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, Effiong Moses (MON), who died early on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in the United States after a lengthy illness.”
