In a significant step to ease congestion in the Western Port System and drive economic growth, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the creation of Inland Dry Ports (IDPs) in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and Moniya, Oyo State.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, reduce pressure on Lagos ports, and generate employment for the nation’s youth.
The approval, confirmed by Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola during the 2025 Budget Defence to the Joint Senate Committee on Marine Transport and House Committees on Ports and Harbour, is a key move in the federal government’s plan to revamp the maritime sector.
Oyetola highlighted that the establishment of Inland Dry Ports will alleviate strain on seaports and create job opportunities for youths in Ogun, Oyo, and surrounding western states.
These ports are expected to become essential hubs for transportation, storage, and distribution, having a significant impact on the region’s economy.
“These IDPs are vital for reducing congestion in our Western Port System,” Oyetola noted.
He also discussed persistent challenges in Nigeria’s maritime sector, such as poor infrastructure, silted rivers, and limited fish production, and assured that the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is addressing these issues through key projects to boost operations and revenue generation.
“The Ministry is dedicated to enhancing maritime safety, increasing fish production, and using technology to improve operations,” Oyetola stated.
He also revealed that the Ministry had finalized critical documents to establish a strong foundation for a sustainable maritime policy.
“These documents will guide infrastructure development and the growth of the blue economy in the coming years,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Oyetola emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to building on past successes by focusing on port infrastructure, fish production, and maritime safety and security.
“As we prepare for the 2025 Budget, our goal is to continue improving port infrastructure and create more opportunities for Nigerians in the maritime sector,” he concluded.
