A devastating fire erupted in a house in the Ja’en Sabere area of Gwale Local Government Area, Kano, northern Nigeria, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old girl and significant damage to the property. The incident was confirmed by the house owner, Saminu Abba, in a statement to DAILY POST on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Saminu revealed that the fire began around 1:00 AM on Wednesday night, and emergency responders, including the Kano State Fire Service, local vigilantes, and other residents, rushed to the scene.
“We were asleep when we heard a loud noise and people shouting in the neighborhood,” Saminu recalled. “When we woke up, we found parts of our house on fire, blocking the exits, and the blaze was rapidly spreading.”
He went on to explain that, with the help of the fire service, vigilantes, and other community members, the fire was contained after they broke into the neighboring house. Six individuals managed to escape, but tragically, their 18-year-old daughter, who had sickle cell disease, lost her life in the fire.
In addition to the loss of life, Saminu mentioned that their clothing and other belongings were completely destroyed by the flames, and he has called on the authorities for urgent assistance in light of their severe losses.
DAILY POST reached out to the Kano State Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, who, though unaware of the incident due to being on an official trip, promised to provide additional details once he was able.
