Gospel singer and fitness enthusiast Oluwatimileyin Ajayi was arrested after being found with his girlfriend’s severed head in a community near Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Ajayi, known for his gospel music, was apprehended on Sunday, January 12, near a church in Orozo, bordering Nasarawa and Abuja. According to Caleb Umaru, the church’s Bible Study Teacher and General Secretary, the incident unfolded towards the end of a service around 11 a.m. during the final pledge and prayers.
Umaru explained that a church member, Brother Victor, noticed Ajayi walking suspiciously by the river carrying a bag. He alerted another member, Brother Amos, and when they approached, Ajayi threw a black nylon bag into the river. When questioned, Ajayi denied throwing anything but was later spotted by two bikers who asked the church members about him. After confirming the description, they found Ajayi still sitting at the back of the church. Upon realizing he was caught, Ajayi fled, but the group managed to catch him after a struggle in a nearby farm.
Umaru described it as “the grace of God” that they were able to apprehend Ajayi. When questioned by the police, Ajayi revealed he had been in a relationship with the victim for about a year. An argument broke out when he discovered his girlfriend was chatting with another man. During the altercation, she cut his hand with a knife, prompting him to grab the knife and fatally stab her in the neck.
Ajayi claimed he was taking the severed head to a woman who had instructed him to do so. The police took him into custody along with the head. Umaru confirmed Ajayi’s identity as a gospel singer, with a friend from Lagos verifying his career.
Ajayi, originally from Kabba in Kogi State, was found with a fresh human head. He explained the incident as the result of a violent altercation. However, FCT Police spokesperson DSP Josephine Adeh clarified that the incident took place in Nasarawa, not the FCT, urging accuracy in media reports.
