Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by lawmakers, according to News360 Nigeria.
Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa I, was immediately elected as the new speaker.
In addition to Obasa’s removal, the House also ousted Clerk Olalekan Onafeko, who was reportedly appointed by Obasa and played a role in restricting journalist access to Assembly proceedings.
Following the impeachment, armed personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos Task Force, and the Police have secured the Assembly’s premises, blocking access to motorists and pedestrians.
Obasa’s removal was described as swift and forceful, with Meranda taking the oath of office as the new Speaker. She affirmed her commitment to perform her duties in line with Nigeria’s Constitution.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested several individuals attempting to disrupt the process, seizing charms and amulets believed to be associated with Obasa’s supporters from Agege.
