The organisers of a children’s funfair in Ibadan, where many children lost their lives in a stampede on December 18, have been arrested. The event took place at Islamic High School, Basorun, in Oyo State.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the arrests on his X account and said investigations are ongoing. He also assured that measures have been implemented to prevent further fatalities while expressing his condolences to the victims and their families.
Makinde wrote, “Earlier today, a tragic incident occurred at the Islamic High School Basorun, during a family event. A stampede at the venue resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. This is a sorrowful day for Oyo State, and our hearts go out to the parents who have lost their children.”
He added that security forces and medical teams have been deployed to restore order and ensure safety, and the event was halted with attendees escorted from the site. “We are taking all necessary steps to secure the venue,” he said.
While the investigation continues, Makinde confirmed that the main organisers of the event have been detained. “I assure the public that anyone responsible will face the appropriate consequences. Please remain calm as we work through this situation.”
The governor extended his condolences, saying, “Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.”
Although the identities of the organisers were not officially disclosed, it was previously reported that the funfair was organised by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat. The radio station had promoted the event on social media the day before.
