The Federal Government has officially announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in a move to honor General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday. The decision was finalized during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Idris, the proposal to formally rename the institution will be forwarded to the National Assembly for final approval. This legislative step ensures the name change aligns with all legal and administrative requirements.
Renaming the university is part of the government’s broader strategy to honor individuals who have made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s history, unity, and development. General Yakubu Gowon’s tenure as Head of State was marked by efforts to maintain national cohesion during challenging times, including the civil war era.
The renaming serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy and symbolizes the government’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating national icons who have played pivotal roles in shaping the nation. The University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, stands as a testament to Nigeria’s acknowledgment of its past leaders and their sacrifices for the country’s unity and progress.
Idris emphasized that the gesture reflects a renewed focus on upholding the values of patriotism, service, and excellence, which General Gowon exemplified throughout his public life. This change is expected to inspire future generations to draw lessons from his leadership and dedication to the nation.
