Chiamaka Nnadozie has earned a spot as one of the final three nominees for the 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed the shortlist on Thursday, December 12, with Nnadozie joining Zambia’s Barbara Banda and Morocco’s Sanna Mssoudy. As the only goalkeeper in the running, Nnadozie is aiming to become the first goalkeeper to win the prestigious award since its inception in 2001.
This year’s award will crown a new champion, as Asisat Oshoala’s reign since 2018 comes to an end. The Super Falcons striker, who has claimed the title six times, including the last three years, is not part of the shortlist this time.
Nnadozie, who was also nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Year award, previously claimed the honor in 2023. The 24-year-old has had an outstanding year, delivering exceptional performances for both her club and country in 2024.
In the 2023/24 French women’s league, Nnadozie was named Goalkeeper of the Season after helping Paris FC to a third-place finish. She also represented Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she stood out despite the Super Falcons’ early exit in the group stage after three losses.
The winners will be announced on December 16 at the 2024 CAF Awards ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.
In the men’s category, Stanley Nwabali missed out on the final shortlist for Goalkeeper of the Year, with Andre Onana, Ronwen Williams, and Yahia Fofana securing spots in the top three.
