The 34-year-old Jamaican footballer was injured in the crash on Saturday afternoon in Epping Forest, Essex, where his silver Ferrari collided and left him trapped in the passenger seat for over 45 minutes. Fire crews worked to free him from the wreckage.
West Ham confirmed on Saturday that Antonio was in stable condition after being airlifted to the hospital, and a follow-up statement on Sunday revealed he had undergone surgery. The club expressed gratitude to the emergency services, medical team, and the football community for their support.
Antonio’s first words after the crash, according to reports, were: “Where am I? What’s going on? What car am I in?”
Samuel Woods, who found Antonio after walking his dog nearby, described the scene: “He was so disorientated. He kept asking, ‘Where am I? What’s going on? What car am I in?’ The car smelled of petrol, and he was sitting in the passenger seat, confused.”
Essex Police confirmed an investigation into the crash, which occurred before 1pm on Coppice Row. They are calling for witnesses, including those with CCTV or dash cam footage, to assist. Essex Fire Service also confirmed that firefighters freed Antonio from the car.
