Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized the Kwankwasiyya Movement, describing it as an example of “excessive militancy” that, in his view, undermines the principles of democracy.
According to Sowunmi, the movement, which stems from the political career of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State, has strayed far from democratic ideals. The movement takes its name from Kwankwaso, the leader and founder, who has built a significant political following over the years.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sowunmi shared his opinion, stating, “I’m sure you wouldn’t want to hear my take on the Kwankwasiyya movement. I hold a different view when it comes to my respect for Rabiu Kwankwaso. However, that excessive militancy is absolutely outrageous. Democracy is not about chaos or disorder.”
He further emphasized, “Democracy should be about meaningful discourse and constructive dialogue, not about encouraging young people to engage in violent confrontations or mob-like behavior.”
