A female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Kwara State was allegedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School in the Kulende area of Ilorin for not greeting them properly.
The incident, reported by the Nigerian Tribune, occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the corps member, whose name is withheld, went to the school to collect her clearance letter. Eyewitnesses claimed one teacher attacked her, ripping her NYSC white T-shirt, and another slapped her.
Morakinyo Oladipo, the NYSC’s head of Information and Public Relations in Kwara State, confirmed the assault and said the NYSC would seek justice for the corps member. He added that the state government had been notified through the Ministry of Youth, which oversees the scheme.
Oladipo stated that the corps member would be reposted to another location to help her recover from the trauma. “The story is true, and we are taking all necessary actions to address the incident,” he said. “We have informed the state government, and they have acted promptly since the news broke.”
The NYSC spokesperson emphasized that the law would determine the appropriate punishment for the teachers involved. “We expect a thorough investigation and action against those responsible for the assault on the corps member, who is on a national assignment,” he added.
