A Federal High Court in Abuja has acquitted 50 individuals, including four women, who were accused of being members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and charged with terrorism.
On Friday, November 29, Judge James Omotosho ruled that the police had failed to present sufficient evidence to support the terrorism charges against the defendants. He stated that no credible evidence had been provided to link the accused to the alleged terrorist activities. As a result, Omotosho dismissed the three-count charge, effectively freeing the 50 individuals.
The Inspector-General of Police had brought the case against the accused under charge FHC/ABJ/CR/8/2024, alleging that they had gathered in a truck as part of a plot related to terrorism. However, the court found that the prosecution had not established a prima facie case.
