The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will introduce a new tariff plan for the telecommunications sector on December 13, 2024. This move is part of ongoing efforts to streamline tariffs and improve consumer experience.
Dr. Wada confirmed, “A new tariff plan will be announced on December 13, 2024. We’ve consulted stakeholders for input.”
The NCC has also instructed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to a maximum of seven. This aims to reduce complexity, ensure transparency, protect consumers, and foster fair competition.
Dr. Wada added, “This measure will provide relief to telecom consumers and clear up misunderstandings about data and airtime usage. The commission has been running awareness campaigns to educate consumers.”
Regarding data depletion concerns, Dr. Wada revealed that an audit by the NCC uncovered widespread misconceptions among consumers. “Consumers need to understand that data usage varies across Android devices. We’re conducting public awareness campaigns to clarify data consumption,” he stated.
Additionally, the NCC has instructed all licensed telecom operators to update their contact information by January 9, 2025, as required by the Licensing Regulations of 2019.
Mr. Muoka emphasized that this directive is part of efforts to enhance regulatory processes and strengthen Nigeria’s telecom industry. He cautioned that non-compliance could lead to penalties, including fines, suspension, or even revocation of licenses.
