Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has shared the reasons why he chose not to align with any political party in Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, in Abuja, during a visit by the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the 90-year-old elder statesman explained that his primary allegiance is to Nigeria, emphasizing that his military background shaped his commitment to serving the country above all political affiliations.
“I’ve always believed in taking the best elements from different ideologies, be it socialism, capitalism, or others, and using them for the nation’s benefit,” Gowon said. He added that while he valued diverse perspectives during his time in government, decisions were always made in the interest of the people and the nation.
Gowon also reflected on the sacrifices made by the northern region, particularly in addressing fears of regional dominance, given its large size and population. He explained that these concerns were discussed extensively with political leaders and other groups.
The former leader also highlighted the significant anxiety in the south about the potential dominance of the north, which nearly led to calls for secession from various regions, including the west, east, and north. He cautioned that had this happened, Nigeria might have fractured into separate nations based on ethnic lines.
“I hesitate to say more, as it might offend someone here,” Gowon added, alluding to the sensitive nature of the topic.
The ex-military ruler also expressed sadness over the current challenges facing the north, particularly the rise of extremist groups like the Lukurawa from Mali, whose activities have exacerbated the region’s difficulties.
Gen. Gowon ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, before being overthrown in a military coup.
