The resumption date for primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa State has been postponed due to widespread flooding that has submerged several schools and displaced many residents.
Many schools, especially in the riverine areas, remain under water, while others are being used as temporary shelters for flood victims. As a result, the state government, through the Ministry of Education, has extended the 2024 flood break by one week, moving the resumption date from Monday, November 18, to Monday, November 25.
The state’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Simon-Peter Okene, confirmed the new resumption date in a circular. However, there are concerns among residents that if the floodwaters persist, the resumption may be delayed further. Unlike last year, the floodwaters have been slow to recede.
Okene explained that the extension was necessary due to the significant flooding affecting many school premises across the state. He also urged private school operators to strictly follow the official school calendar and ensure that all necessary safety measures, such as fumigation and grass cutting, are carried out before reopening.
The government has expressed its sympathy for the flood victims and reassured the public of its ongoing efforts to manage the crisis.
