The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has threatened to terminate 10 federal road contracts in Niger State due to significant delays. He issued this warning during a stakeholder meeting at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters, where the condition of federal roads in the state was discussed.
The meeting, chaired by Umahi, included Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo, state assembly members, and Senate Committee Chairman on Finance Mohammed Sani, among others.
Umahi’s threat follows a complaint from Governor Bago about the poor state of the Abuja-Minna Road, which he criticized as a failure on the part of the contractor. According to a statement released by Umahi’s media adviser, Orji Uchenna, the minister expressed frustration with contractors who, despite receiving significant advance payments, have either not completed their work or delivered substandard results, leading to prolonged delays and hardship for road users.
Umahi reiterated the government’s commitment to the Renewed Hope administration’s policy, emphasizing the need for quality, speedy delivery of road projects. He warned that contractors who fail to meet expectations or delay work could face contract termination.
The 10 federal road projects under scrutiny include the 52km Agaje-Katcha-Baro road (Contract No: 6254) managed by GR Building and Construction Nig. Ltd, and the dualization of the Suleja-Lambata-Minna Road (Phase I & II, Contract Nos: 6077 & 6267) handled by Salini Nigeria Ltd, among others.
