Yusif Abdullahi Ata, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, has warned Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate for the New Nigeria’s Peoples Party (NNPP), to avoid making statements that could deepen divisions and potentially lead to contempt of court regarding the ongoing Kano Emirate Council legal dispute.
Ata’s warning follows Kwankwaso’s comments during a convocation at Skylight University, where he accused the Lagos government of interfering in the selection of Kano’s Emir. Kwankwaso claimed, “It’s clear that there’s a concerted effort from the Lagos axis to polarize this region… Lagos won’t allow us to choose our Emir.”
In response, the Minister reminded Kwankwaso that the case is still under judicial review and urged him to refrain from remarks that might be perceived as contemptuous. Ata emphasized that such statements could undermine the court’s authority and fuel further tensions.
“My message is simple: leaders must act responsibly,” Ata said. “We need to foster unity, not division. Statements that create uncertainty and disharmony among citizens are not helpful.”
The dispute over the Kano Emirate has generated significant debate, but Ata urged all involved to respect the ongoing legal proceedings. He reiterated the need for leaders to focus on national unity rather than engaging in rhetoric that could exacerbate divisions.
“It is crucial to prioritize the nation’s peace and cohesion, especially in these challenging times,” Ata concluded.
Kwankwaso’s remarks continue to draw mixed reactions. While some support his view of external interference, others, including Ata, stress the importance of respecting the legal process and avoiding divisive rhetoric.
