A revenue collector was tragically killed by a containerized truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday, November 17, 2024. The incident occurred when the victim was attempting to collect dues from the truck driver.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident in a statement by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq. According to LASTMA, a containerized truck (FST 887 XD) was involved in the fatal crash near New Garage, heading toward Lagos. The collector was struck while crossing the road and died instantly from the impact.
LASTMA personnel quickly responded to manage the scene. The deceased’s body was handed over to the Adigboluje Police Division, which is working with the family to complete the necessary procedures. The victim’s wife arrived at the scene shortly after hearing the news.
The truck driver, shaken by the severity of the incident, fled the scene to avoid responsibility. LASTMA officials cleared the truck, which had caused heavy traffic, and handed it over to the police for further investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his condolences to the grieving family and urged transport unions to educate their members on safer ways to collect dues, particularly in high-risk areas like expressways.
“This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for better safety measures in revenue collection, especially on busy highways,” said Mr. Bakare-Oki. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”
