The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed full security preparations for the Ondo State governorship election on Saturday. In a statement on Thursday, NPF spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi outlined that officers would be deployed across the state, covering all 18 local government areas, 203 wards, and 3,933 polling units. Each polling station will be staffed with at least four police officers, working alongside other security agencies to ensure smooth and secure voting.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Sylvester Alabi, in a briefing at the Akure police headquarters, reassured the public of comprehensive security measures. He emphasized intelligence gathering and firm actions to prevent any security threats, including electoral fraud and vote-buying.
The NPF also stressed the importance of collaboration with other agencies and the public, urging citizens to follow the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines. Offenders would be arrested and prosecuted, the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed sensitive materials, including ballot papers, to all local governments in the state. The distribution, supervised by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, was witnessed by representatives from political parties, security agencies, and stakeholders.
In a bid to further ensure election security, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 1,500 personnel, along with 25 patrol vehicles, 7 tow trucks, and 6 ambulances. They will enforce vehicle movement restrictions and ensure smooth operations on election day.
Additionally, the Ondo State government has declared a work-free day on Friday, with government offices and schools closed to allow citizens to focus on the election.
