Ibrahim Yau, the Deputy Comptroller of Corrections at the Suleja custodial facility in Niger State, has highlighted that the ongoing economic challenges are making it increasingly difficult to provide adequate meals for the inmates in their care.
Yau made this statement during a visit by officials from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, who were at the facility to offer free legal services and advocate for improved inmate conditions. He expressed concern over the inadequate daily feeding allowance, which he said is not enough to provide quality meals for the growing number of detainees.
The facility, originally designed for 250 inmates, is currently housing 405, putting further strain on its resources. Yau also acknowledged the valuable support of NGOs, noting that the Nigerian government alone cannot fully meet the welfare needs of the custodial facilities.
