Documents from the public payments portal, Govspend, reveal that the Nigerian presidency under Bola Tinubu spent N5.1 billion on vehicles between August 18 and September 9, a span of just 21 days.
According to the data, the State House paid N3.4 billion on August 18 for 16 units of 2023/2024 Toyota Prado SUVs, costing N212 million each. On September 9, an additional N1.7 billion was spent on 10 units of the 2023 Toyota Camry V4, at N170 million each.
Earlier this year, SaharaReporters reviewed the Open Treasury platform and found that the Tinubu administration spent N9.2 billion on vehicles between March and May 2024. With the latest expenditure of N5.1 billion, the total spending on motor vehicles by the presidency now stands at N14.4 billion in 2024.
This comes as Nigeria grapples with a growing debt burden, heavily relying on loans to fund its budget. SaharaReporters also reported that the country’s debt has surpassed N46 trillion under the current administration, with debt servicing consuming N4.4 trillion as of Q2 2024.
