Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has strongly condemned reports of extortion by some officers in the force and has directed severe punishment for any officers found guilty of corruption.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 8, by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the IGP referred to a specific case involving officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenegoa, including ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine. These officers were accused of extorting N10 million from a group of young Nigerians.
The money has since been recovered, thanks to the efforts of the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 16. The officers involved have been detained and are undergoing an orderly room trial.
The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct, emphasizing that the force takes all allegations of extortion and abuse of power very seriously. He further assured the public that thorough investigations will continue to be carried out on any officers accused of such misconduct.
As part of efforts to promote accountability and restore public trust, IGP Egbetokun has mandated severe consequences for any officer, regardless of rank, found guilty of corruption. The IGP’s goal is to serve as a deterrent to others who may seek to compromise the integrity of the force.
Additionally, IGP Egbetokun has announced the rescheduling of a crucial workshop for all police officers, set to take place on Monday, November 11, 2024. The workshop will focus on child care and protection, with particular emphasis on improving investigations that involve vulnerable individuals, especially children in conflict with the law.
The initiative aims to enhance the technical and ethical standards of police investigations and promote a child-friendly approach to law enforcement. Through this, the Nigeria Police Force seeks to foster a culture of professionalism, compassion, and transparency, strengthening public trust and confidence in the organization.
