Gunmen stormed a quarry in Akamkpa Local Government Area of southern Cross River State on Thursday, November 7, 2024, killing a police inspector and kidnapping three individuals, including two Chinese expatriates and one Nigerian.
The attackers, dressed in military camouflage, launched their assault on the MarkSino quarry around 5:20 PM. During the attack, they killed the police inspector, stole his rifle, and abducted the two Chinese nationals and one Nigerian worker.
In response, the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 6, AIG Jonathan Towuru, has ordered a full-scale manhunt for the gunmen. Towuru directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department to visit the scene and intensify efforts to apprehend the criminals, rescue the victims, and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
A statement from the police noted, “The armed assailants gained access to the quarry by exploiting a security lapse involving a civilian worker at the gate. After the attack, they fled with the victims and the slain officer’s AK-47 rifle.”
AIG Towuru also expressed condolences to the family of the slain inspector and reassured the public that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
