The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed all officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to wear black bands for seven days in remembrance of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
This directive, communicated through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, is meant to honor Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s bravery, commitment, and passion in combating insurgency and violent crimes in Nigeria throughout his career.
In the statement, Adejobi noted, “In light of the passing of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has ordered that all police officers wear black bands during the seven-day mourning period. This gesture is to pay tribute to the late General, who displayed immense courage and dedication in the fight against terrorism and banditry in the country. His exemplary leadership deserves to be commemorated. May his soul rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), has expressed deep sadness at the death of General Lagbaja, who passed away in Lagos after a brief illness.
In his statement, Argungu described the late General as a courageous soldier who played a pivotal role in the fight against insurgency and supported the president’s efforts to rid the country of terrorism. He extended his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Army, and the family of the deceased, praying that God grants his soul eternal rest.
Argungu also prayed for God’s guidance for the new Chief of Army Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, hoping he will build upon the strong foundation laid by his predecessor.
